About

Magdalena Chowaniec, born in Poland works across choreography, performance, art mediation and curation. Initially classically trained at the State Ballet School in Bytom (Poland), she pursued her dance training at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz (Austria).

Researcher and Community Organizer

Her practice explores choreographic and somatic methods as tools of gentle resistance, socio-political reorganisation and both individual and collective transformation. Beside her artistic research activities, she engages with diverse communities as part of dialogical praxis of co-creation and against any forms of oppression and discrimination. She teaches regularly dance improvisation, voice and movement to professionals and non-professionals, works as a cultural mediator, performance coach and dramaturg. In 2024 she co-funded MACHBARINNEN, an all migrant women for women association for arts, culture and social work.

Performer Choreographer Curator for City Projects

As a performer her collaborations include projects by artists such as Amanda Piña, Alex Baczyński-Jenkins, Michael Laub, Oleg Soulimenko and Ulduz Ahmadzadeh a.o. Her own choreographic work has been presented at ImPulsTanz Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Kampnagel, Sophiensäle, Austrian Institute in Warsaw and Bucharest, Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art a.o. In 2023 and 2025, she choreographed two opera productions for the Vienna State Opera. From 2019 to 2020, she worked as an artistic researcher at the doctoral school of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. From 2021 to 2024, she was a curator of urban projects and cultural mediator at Tangente Festival in St. Pölten (Austria).

Musician
Since 2015, she has performed as part of the rave duo Mermaid & Seafruit, created with musician Markus Steinkellner.
